"I am very thankful for the opportunity to participate in this program, despite all the challenges that the pandemic has brought. It has been fascinating to learn from medical professionals in the new age of COVID-19, when health care is more important than ever."

SSRP has given me the invaluable opportunity to learn from various health professionals in Hawaiʻi and work with an amazing cohort of interns.  This program has taught me how to apply my research skills learned from prior bench research experience to a clinical setting. While working on my research project, I’ve learned how to better manage my time, adapt to unforeseen challenges, and collaborate with others.

For my research project, I am working with Dr. Heidi Hillesland to analyze the demographics of the population receiving COVID-19 tests at Hawaiʻi Pacific Health. We are looking at how factors such as age, sex, race, insurance, and primary language differ among the patients testing positive for COVID-19 compared to the total population being tested at Hawaiʻi Pacific Health. This information will help us determine if there are any demographics that are underrepresented by the current testing protocols.
