Teacher Training Topics: Didactic Teaching in MBSR (Summer 2017)

The Mindfulness Teacher Training Topic Series provides mindfulness program facilitators-in-training to explore particular methods utilized in the process of mindfulness-based group facilitation. Participants will deepen their understanding of the inherent supports and barriers in the group process and their influence on activities presented in the classroom setting.

Each seasonal program will focus on a particular topic.  Facilitated by Dr. Karen Bowles, Director of Professional Mindfulness Training.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This is a five (5) week class and the classes are 3 hours each.


Pre-requisites:

  • Completion of an 8-week Mindfulness-based Stress Management Course*
  • Completion of a Practicum in Mindfulness-based Stress Management* (or Reduction ) program (and all Practicum prerequisites)
  • Approval by the Director


*This program does not have to have been completed with The Penn Program for Mindfulness

Overview

Didactic Teaching in MBSR (5 weeks)

A mindfulness instructor should be able to present the didactic material included in an MBSR/MBSM program in a clear and impactful way. Students in an MBSR/MBSM foundation course rely on the teacher’s ability to make these “lessons” relatable by using personal anecdotes, weaving in themes that have arisen in class discussions and skillfully answering clarifying questions.

 

During this skills-based course, we will review the essential didactic material presented in an MBSR/MBSM 8-week program. Each participants will have the opportunity to present two different topics to the group and receive feedback from the instructor. Additional learning will occur as participants watch their peers present, listen to the instructor's feedback and refine their knowledge during a summary discussion at the end of each week. 

 

If you cannot attend all five sessions, it is strongly recommended that you not sign up for the course at this time.
