 | Sam Bailey Sam is a farmer, pilot, inspirational speaker and best selling author. His extraordinary talk tells how at just 19-years-of-age the outback jackeroo became a quadriplegic in a car accident.
Left with limited use of his arms and hands, paralysed from the chest down and with an intolerance to heat and cold, the medical experts suggested his lifelong dream to be a farmer were now over. Despite that, he went home to the family farm and proved everyone wrong. A four wheel motor bike became his ‘legs’ around the property, he developed a hoist to get in and out of farm machinery and learnt to fly an ultralight aircraft. In 1999 he proposed to his wife Jenny – then a radio journalist - ‘live’ on ABC Radio with an overwhelming response.
Jenny and Sam now work together on the farm and travel the country giving inspiration to others. Sam’s story has appeared on ‘Australian Story’ and in his book “Head Over Heels”, a best seller published by ABC Books. He and Jenny are now working towards his next big goal – to become the first quadriplegic in the world to fly a helicopter. Sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank, the project called Helifirst will see Sam fly into schools to speak to children.
