Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative
is an initiative of the Texas Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ). The purpose of the Texas Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative is to increase exclusive breastfeeding throughout Texas in the immediate postpartum period and continuing through six months of age by creating environments in which women’s choices concerning breastfeeding can best be supported. More specifically, NICHQ will enable facilities to complete the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding (
) and effectively connect mothers to post-discharge community supports for breastfeeding. From this point forward, the project will be referred to as “
The Texas Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative
This learning collaborative will use a change model, known as the Model for Improvement and a learning model, identified as the Breakthrough Series (BTS) Collaborative, both of which have demonstrated effectiveness in previous projects that NICHQ has undertaken
undertaken with various regional, state and national stakeholders
as well as within Cohort A of the Texas Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative. NICHQ will engage partners in this work to address and measure disparities in care and outcomes throughout the process.
The Texas Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative is an innovative project designed to enable teams to share, test and implement ideas for improving rates of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers who deliver at facilities in Texas. This exciting and challenging project will require that teams engage with energy and skill to try new ways of delivering care. Together, we can arrive at and spread ideas that will improve breastfeeding outcomes and serve as a model of how to improve care more broadly.
