Currency and Methods of Payment
The current exchange rate is 3600 Ugandan shillings to the US Dollar, but this varies. Please click here to see rates.

Uganda for the most part is a cash based society. The Uganda Shilling is the official currency of Uganda, the unofficial other currency is the US Dollar. Occasionally credit cards are accepted. Visa cards are accepted the most followed by Master Card however, Discover and American Express cards are rarely accepted. There is typically a 5-6% or more surcharge for the privilege of using a credit card (due to the fees that are incurred by merchants in Uganda). Many hotels, safari companies and airlines will ask for US dollars. Uganda Shillings will be accepted in many cases (not always at market exchange rate). Traveler Checks are often harder to cash and are cumbersome requiring extra fees at banks.

The primary language in Uganda is English.

In Uganda, the power sockets are of type G (see image). 240 volts is the voltage in Uganda and you will need a UK plug. You can buy a converter plug that will make your appliance fit locally. The standard frequency is 50 HZ.
