This one-day class, developed by Dave Dodson, is the most-popular class offered by Response Solutions. Often, smoke issuing from a building is the only clue available to predict fire behavior and the likelihood of a flashover or rapid fire spread. First-arriving officers, Incident Commanders, and Safety Officers MUST know how to rapidly read smoke – this class explains the reading-smoke process and gives participants practice using actual fire-ground video. The course outline includes:
The “Advanced” Basics of Smoke and Fire Behavior
Hostile Fire Events and Warning Signs
The 3-Step Process
Rapid-Read “Short Cuts”
Response Solutions also offers a half-day version of this class for those that need to rotate in-service crews through the material. The shorter class does not offer as much time for participants to practice the skill on their own.
Fire Engineering Books and Video has produced three training DVDs that captures the essence of reading smoke and is perfect for in-house, company drills. The DVDs were designed to help participants of the full-day “smoke” class take the info back to their respective Fire Departments. The first DVD, “The Art of Reading Smoke,” introduces the topic and gives some examples. The second DVD, “The Art of Reading Smoke – Practice Sessions,” offers seven actual fireground scenarios to help the viewer practice their reading smoke skills. The third DVD is simply called “Volume 3” and offers a look at modern fire behavior, has four rapid-read drills, and four scenarios. They are available for purchase at www.fireengineeringbooks.com.
