Direct Service Workers:  Drop in workers, shelter and hostel workers, child and Youth workers, Youth Justice Workers 


This workshop will focus on the care for persons who have opioid use disorder (OUD). Participants will receive the latest situational update on the "opioid crisis" morbidity and mortality affecting Ontario. Content will then focus on describing what opioids are and their effect on individuals, what opioid use disorder is and how to screen and assess for it.  Assessing and managing opioid acute withdrawal utilizing pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions will be presented.  The onging care of persons with opioid use disorder utilizing best practices such as opioid against therapy will also be explored.  Specific situations will be presented including adolescents who have OUD, pregnancy and OUD and acute pain and OUD.


Participants will be able to:

  •  Have an increased understanding of opioid morbidity and mortality in Ontario due to the "opioid crisis"
  • Describe what opioids and opioid use disorder are
  • Learn best practice strategies for managing opioid withdrawal
  • Learn best practice strategies for ongoing care of a person with opioid use disorder including opioid against therapy
  • Learn about care for persons with opioid use disorder and specific situations.
