The Modern Family

The notion of what makes up a family has expanded in recent years as cultural changes in America have shifted the essence of what was once termed, "The Traditional Family". With this shift comes a new understanding of how a family unit is defined.

This 2-day training offers participants the opportunity to explore the diversity found in the various families served in Illinois Early Intervention. Military families, single parent/teen parent families, gay/lesbian parent families, adoptive/foster families, nuclear/dual income families and grandparents raising grandchildren are among some of the family dynamics presented. The pitfalls of using a 'One Size Fits All' approach to teaming with families will also be discussed.

Individual reflection, group work, and lively discussion are part of this interactive training that will help equip early interventionists in recognizing the needs of diverse families, assist them in family competence, help navigate the complex emotions that can occur and generate a holistic intervention practice for children with disabilities within the modern family.

This training series is presented in two 4-hour sessions with a required 'homework' component between sessions in which participants will view a video and write a response.

Participants are required to complete all components in order to receive 10 hours of early intervention credential credit. NO PARTIAL CREDIT WILL BE AWARDED.
