The restoration of the Los Angeles River has increasingly become part of the public discourse. Several plans detail a conception of the river that includes recreational opportunity, developments, elaborate parks, open space and trails. To many, the LA River is the last great hope to connect Los Angeles with nature. A "river community" has developed to become a strong advocate for its revitalization and development. Despite this forward momentum, the current conditions of the Los Angeles River present a challenge to these restoration and development plans.
