Toronto RNA Enthusiasts’ Day 2020 - TREnD 2020 Online

Conference Overview

Over the last four years, Toronto RNA Enthusiasts’ Day (TREnD) has brought together researchers at every level of training across the Greater Toronto Area to unite and strengthen our community of outstanding RNA biologists. Given the current circumstances and the impact of COVID-19, this year we are cancelling the in-person event and implementing a free online meeting in its place. Our mission remains the same: to share ideas and state-of the-art technologies, establish cross-disciplinary collaborations, and increase connections amongst our scientific network. New opportunities have also emerged: with an online format, TREnD 2020 Online is excited to expand our reach to RNA enthusiasts not just in our region, but all across Canada.

TREnD 2020 Online will encompass two days of RNA-related talks by trainees across multiple model genetic systems, taking place from 1:00-4:00 pm EST on July 29th and 30th. We are excited to kick off Day 1 with our keynote speaker, Dr. Laura Landweber from the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Landweber’s lab investigates the origin of novel genetic systems and complex genome architectures using the ciliate Oxytricha as a model. Recent discoveries include the ability of small and long non-coding RNA molecules to program genome organization across generations, bypassing the information encoded in DNA. Kicking off Day 2, Dr. April Pawluk, Scientific Editor at Cell, will lead a workshop on how to construct an effective RNA manuscript.

TREnD 2020 Online will be delivered using the Zoom platform. Registration is required. Detailed instructions for attendees and speakers will be provided closer to the meeting. As we will be unable to administer an online poster session, we have increased the number of oral presentations to 14, with 7 trainee talks each day.

While we will certainly miss our in-person format, we hope that the fifth annual TREnD will inspire RNA enthusiasts all the same – this year from home.
