and Infrastructure and Property and Regeneration groups have joined
forces to get talking about property investment connected to transport
infrastructure. We are bringing together three experts to share their
experiences from across the UK. We have asked our experts to stimulate
discussion amongst our members about how to take existing experiences
and apply these to the Manchester context.
Harbinder Birdi - Partner
Harbinder is an Architect and Partner at Hawkins\Brown that leads the transport and infrastructure sector and is currently delivering the architectural designs for two of London's largest infrastructure projects, Crossrail and Thames Tideway. He is the principle architect for the design for Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street and Liverpool street station, three of the central section Crossrail stations and is also the principle architect leading the designs for the public realm of the central section of Thames Tideway in London. He also recently completed the practices first bridge, which was launched across an operational railway at East Croydon.
Harbinder collaborates extensively with artists on insitu installations within architecture, most notably with artist Daniel Buren for Tottenham Court Road Station.
He is a visiting critic and lecturer at a number of universities including the UCL, Royal College of Art and Manchester School of Architecture.
He is also a previous winner of '40 under 40’, a prestigious design award recognising the best young architects under 40.
Giles Henday - Partner
Giles Henday is a Partner of CPC who specialise in managing property and transport infrastructure projects.
He has led many major projects for TfL including the extension of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Terminal 5 and the stations modernisation programme as well as helping private developers build on and around railway assets. He has been involved in TfL’s strategic planning for tackling capacity issues at stations and introducing Step Free Access particularly where these features can mutually benefit new developments and improved public realm.
A Chartered Engineer and Member of the Association for Project Management Giles’ early career involved international water schemes before moving into the rail industry to manage projects on all types of railway assets. Interesting diversions have included building new basement catering facilities in the House of Lords and helping the Highways Agency initiate the Smart Motorways programme around the UK.
Giles is a strong believer in enabling collaborative working and communication to ensure project success which includes effective ways of seeking and sharing lessons and experience. The more time and effort that can be invested in the early stages of a project on building a strong team and clearly defining the scheme pays dividends in ensuring that even the most complex challenges can be overcome. This is particularly true where developments directly impacting the railway are concerned.
