Summary

Description: The harm reduction field involves working with populations coping with multiple risks and stressors, including HIV, hepatitis C, overdose, violence, homelessness, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, trauma, racism, poverty, mental illness, and others.  Direct service staff have witnessed the lives of friends, clients, local residents, and colleagues end prematurely due to illness and overdose.  Forms of stress resulting from this work include secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, organizational conflicts, complications in providing direct services and insufficient  resources. This session will strengthen a culture of wellness for harm reduction workers through understanding the impacts of trauma and loss and build upon opportunities to strengthen resiliencies. Harm reduction workers will lead dialogue during portions of the day.
