TRB/AASHTO Joint Roadside Safety Meeting

The World Health Organization has launched the Decade of Action (2011-2020) to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal crashes. In response to this call for action, many agencies are adopting a vision of Toward Zero Deaths and AASHTO has adopted a goal to reduce fatalities in half by 2030 (fatalities less than 20,000 per year).

Roadway Departure crashes are responsible for over half of the fatalities on US roads and are a major contributor to fatalities around the world. The TRB Roadside Safety Design Committee (AFB20) and the AASHTO Technical Committee on Roadside Safety (TCRS) are committed to contribute toward meeting and exceeding the AASHTO goals. With the recent revision/publication of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide (RDG, 2011) and Manual for the Assessment of Safety Hardware (MASH, 2009) it is an appropriate time to look forward to identify goals and research needs that will lead to the next revision of these documents. This workshop will focus on the activities that are needed over the next 10 years that will help to provide this direction.

TRB will offer up to 25 professional development hours (PDH) for participants attending sessions and meetings during July 29-August 1. Forms will be available at the meeting.
