Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award

Dr. K. William "Buddy" Mopper, Pediatric Dentistry '66

Dr. K. William “Buddy” Mopper, DDS University of Iowa, MS UIC Pediatric Dentistry ’66, is an internationally renowned lecturer in esthetic dentistry, emphasizing composite bonding using direct application techniques.

Dr. Mopper is the co-author of A Complete Guide to Dental Bonding, which was the first a definitive book for the dental profession describing bonding techniques.

He has taught direct resin bonding at the Continuing Education level at the UIC College of Dentistry and many other universities and dental meetings worldwide, and has been published widely. He is Director of Education for the Center for Esthetic Excellence in Chicago, Illinois, and is Co-Founder and Chairman of Cosmedent, Inc., where he is responsible for educational programs and product development.

Dr. Mopper is a Life Fellow of the Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, a Founding Member and Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Diplomate of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry, a Life Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry.

Dr. Mopper is the recipient of three of the most prestigious awards given by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. One for Lifelong Commitment to Providing Excellence in Continuing Education in Cosmetic Dentistry, another for Outstanding Contribution to Cosmetic Dentistry, and a third for Outstanding Innovation in Cosmetic Dentistry. He also has earned the New York University College of Dentistry Irwin Smigel Prize in Esthetic Dentistry, and the GenR8T-Next Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Aesthetic Congress in England. Dr. Mopper also received the 2017 Gordon J. Christensen Lecture Recognition Award from the Chicago Dental Society.

Dr. F. William Towner Organized Dentistry Award

Dr. Gary R. Herberger, '78

Dr. Gary R. Herberger, ’78, has been active in the Peoria, IL, District Dental Society, having held several offices, including that of President. He also is a member in the American Association of Hospital Dentists and the American Dental Association.

Dr. Herberger is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentistry, and is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.

A current Preceptor for D-4s at the UIC College of Dentistry, Dr. Herberger also has served previously as a Commission on Dental Accreditation Site Visitor.

Dr. Herberger previously served as Program Director for the St. Francis Medical Center Dental General Practice Residency in Peoria, and continues on staff. He formerly was on staff at Graham Hospital, Canton, IL, and Proctor Hospital, Peoria, and was a Partner in Associates in Dentistry in Canton and Bartonville, IL. Currently, he primarily provides clinical dentistry services to patients with access to care issues.

He completed his General Practice Residency at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago 1978-1979.

Dr. Herberger and his wife, Dale, have three children, Lynn, Ann, and Alan.

Loyola Award

Dr. Raffaele Suriano Award

Dr. Joseph G. Unger, Loyola '85

Dr. Joseph G. Unger, Loyola ’85, was President of the Illinois State Dental Society in 2008-2009. He is a member of the Board of the ISDS Foundation, and is Chair of the Bylaws and Policies Committee for the Foundation. Dr. Unger has served the ISDS as the first Chair of the Young Dentist Committee, as a member of the Select Committee, and as Chair of the Member Services Committee. He is currently a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee. He has been a member of the ISDS House of Delegates and ISDS Board of Trustees.

Dr. Unger is a member of the Englewood Branch of the Chicago Dental Society, where he became active upon graduation and ascended to its presidency in 1995. He has been active in the Chicago Dental Society and was Program Chair for the 2001 Midwinter Meeting. 

Dr. Unger is the 1990 recipient of the William J. Greek Memorial Leadership Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is an examiner for the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS). He has served on the American Dental Association Commission on the Young Professional, on the Indicators Consensus Review Committee, and as a member of the ADA House of Delegates.

He maintains a private practice on the Southwest Side of Chicago.

Faculty Award

Dr. E. Lloyd Du Brul Faculty Achievement Award 

Dr. Michael A. Dunlap, '92

Dr. Michael A. Dunlap, ’92, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the College.

Dr. Dunlap has been a Managing Partner of a Pre-Doctoral Group Practice Clinic since 2006. He currently is Managing Partner of the Bach Clinic. While a student at the College, he earned its Humanitarian Award.

Dr. Dunlap has served as a member of the Board of Directors of CommunityHealth Chicago, the largest free medical clinic in Illinois, and has volunteered at CommunityHealth Chicago. CommunityHealth honored the College with an award in 2015. He also is the faculty member who works with the Student National Dental Association and Hispanic Student Dental Association at the clinic, so he continues to teach College of Dentistry students on his “free” time at the clinic. 

He received a Crystal Apple Award for teaching excellence in 2009, and is active with the American Dental Association, Chicago Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society, and National Dental Association. He is a member of the Sigma XI Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. He is in private practice on the South Side of Chicago.
