University of Rochester Teaching for Quality Certificate Program (URTe4Q)


Program Goal

To equip clinical faculty to lead, design and evaluate effective learning in Quality Improvement/Patient Safety (QI/PS) across the continuum of health professional education. 


The Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) 2013 Expert Panel Report “Teaching for Quality: Integrating Quality Improvement and Patient Safety across the Continuum of Medical Education” urges medical schools and teaching hospitals to expect all clinical faculty to be proficient in QI/PS competencies; and to identify, develop and support a critical mass of faculty as expert educators, to create, implement and evaluate training and education in QI/PS for students, residents and colleagues. Modeled after the AAMC Teaching for Quality (Te4Q) initiative and aligned with URMC strategic initiatives in QI/PS, the goal of this URTe4Q Certificate Program is to ensure that our learners have access to faculty who are ready, able, and willing to engage in and lead education in QI/PS to deliver the highest quality healthcare in a safe, patient and family-friendly environment while reducing excess healthcare costs.

Program Objectives

By completing the certificate program, clinical faculty will be able to:

  1. Gain knowledge on the latest thinking and theories regarding QI/PS and experience in implementing QI/PS processes and techniques in practice;
  2. Address an identified gap in the education of students, residents, and/or practicing clinicians regarding quality improvement and patient safety;
  3. Design an educational innovation to fill that gap;
  4. Implement and assess the impact of the innovation;
  5. Appreciate principles of scholarship in QI/PS.
