Voices of Pride: Intergenerational Stories of Resilience from Across the LGBTQIA+ Community

Conference Co-coordinators: Meridith Apfelbaum, MS and Katherine King, PsyD

Conference Faculty: Nilda Laboy, PsyD and Jessica Stahl, PhD

Sexual orientation and gender are vital pieces of a person’s identity. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience a variety of challenges because of how others react to the development of their sexual orientation and/or gender expression/identity. This conference raises awareness of the experiences that LGBTQIA+ individuals face at different stages of life in a variety of settings and situations. Presenters will give voice to the unique strengths and gifts of resilience experienced across the generations of the LGBTQIA+ community. We hope to provide a platform for intergenerational dialogue, understanding, and relationship building.

Specific learning objectives:

  • Discuss key terminology related to LGBTQIA+ identity development and historical milestones
  • Identify similarities and differences in the life experiences among LGBTQIA+ individuals from different age cohorts
  • Integrate learned clinical knowledge with the lived experiences of the LGBTQIA+ population
