WALLA WALLA: Ready for Action

Ready for Action: What is involved in serving on a nonprofit board

When you think about who is at the center of change in your community, you probably land on nonprofit organizations. They are on the front lines of social justice, education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, the arts, the environment, you name it.  Through nonprofits we express our values and take action around causes we care about, which is even more important in this time of political change.

To deliver change, however, nonprofits need engaged board members who understand their roles and perform them effectively. “Ready for Action” inspires members of the community with the potential to effect change through board service. It introduces the roles, responsibilities, and commitments of board members. As a result, nonprofits can expect an increased pool of prospective board member candidates better prepared to achieve their mission from day one. Prospective board members will know the job and be ready to serve.

If you are interested in becoming more involved in causes and taking action, this event is for you.  The program will be organized as an informal networking and informational session. It includes:

  • An introductory presentation about nonprofits and board members, along with a facilitated Q&A session, which will offer an opportunity to dispel common myths about nonprofits and the role of the board.
  • Presentations by a local nonprofit, focused on the important achievements of their board, and by a local board member, focused on both the rewarding aspects and the realities of serving on a board.
  • Ample time for networking and exchange among participants.

This program is serves as a precursor to Boards In Gear training, which is focused on helping new and existing board members to understand the various functions of their role and provides them with the information and tools needed to execute them effectively.
