Dealing with times of Turbulence and Fear

Peter A Levine, PhD

As SE™ students and Practitioners, you know this pandemic presents us with unique challenges. With Covid-19, we are working with the nervous system while it is still under an invisible perceived threat. Human evolution has prepared us to respond to threats that we can see, identify, and then respond to, as in fight or flight. However, we are now confronted with a potentially lethal pathogen, one that we cannot see, and for which we do not have an evolutionarily prepared active response. In addition, as people shelter in place, they may feel trapped and lonely, worried about a sick loved one, experiencing loss, forced to work in the public, or stuck in an unsafe home environment. Because of this, the presence of Covid-19 may lead to helplessness, anxiety, chronic fear, anger, rebellion, collapse into addiction, depression, as well as various physical symptoms, like chronic pain, IBS, migraines, etc.  With SE we can gently facilitate the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of these heightened trauma responses by diffusing the narrative and allowing a greater capacity to manage these stressful times without overload, burnout, hatred or violence.

Together, we will explore recent findings in the neurosciences that have emerged from those studying Covid-19, which will lead to a better understanding of effective action we can take to minimize suffering during this time. Through a combination of theoretical explanation and body-oriented exercises, participants will experience for themselves the intrinsic body awareness that helps to draw individuals into connection with their life-energy, presence, contact, wholeness, and strength.

This program is for SE students and Practitioners.
