Have you ever avoided issues in the classroom due to apprehension about managing heated discussions? Against the background of public debates framed around polarizing sound bites, faculty are often pressed to reframe controversial issues in more nuanced ways. These opportunities can serve as useful and powerful tools to promote learning, critical thinking, and civic engagement. In this session, we will discuss how to successfully manage controversial “hot topics” in the classroom, and suggest strategies for creating a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, reassessments of assumptions, and engagement with diverse standpoints.
