What Matters 2017: Our Kids
Our Triangle region has undergone a remarkable demographic, cultural, and economic transformation over the past 25 years. Judging by many indicators, the Triangle is a prosperous place – topping many “best of” lists - but we know many people are not thriving here.
Last year, the What Matters Community Luncheon focused on Adapting to Change, and we heard from Dan Heath, author of NY Times Bestseller, Switch. We looked at the implications of growth and change in the Triangle region, and Dan talked with us about “how to change things when change is hard” and the importance of celebrating bright spots amidst complex social issues. This year, as the nation swirls in a conversation of inequality and inequity, we will take a closer look at our region, and what opportunity means here at home. How can we build a thriving Triangle for everyone? What challenges stand in our way, what unique abilities do we each bring to the table, and what obstacles can we hurdle together so that we can build a region of opportunity for all?
About the What Matters Community Luncheon: What Matters is an annual community luncheon that inspires people from all sectors in our Triangle region to learn about and address key community issues together. The event begins with dynamic morning workshops and culminates in a lunch program featuring a keynote speaker and awards presentation. What Matters attracts more than 500 corporate, civic, philanthropic, academic, healthcare, religious and nonprofit leaders who want to make our community great for everyone. At the event, the Foundation will present an Innovation Award to a nonprofit collaboration and two new awards focused on community members – the Catalyst Award and the Legacy Award. Event proceeds support the Fund for the Triangle, which provides funding for the arts, community development, environmental conservation and youth literacy.
