Tree & Wood ID 101 (8 PDHs)
The first portion of the seminar will be spent on the demonstration and practice of a simple leaf and twig identification key as well as the common characteristics of trees to identify common species called for in and used in boundary surveys. We will also use a key from the Sipe book, and other identifying characteristics for wood identification. Samples of common species will be available. Cameras for photos of samples and notes are encouraged. The handout material will include a copy of the keys, a copy of the Forest Trees of West Virginia, and a copy of a list of common trees found in deed descriptions. The second portion of the seminar will be a hike through the woods to practice tree and stump identification to demonstrate what was taught in the classroom.
