Yale Explores…
The 21st Century City and Society

Between now and 2050, the world’s urban population will grow by an estimated 2.5 billion, constituting 66 percent of the world’s population. The successful management of such unprecedented growth requires an examination of the politics and local governments, economic and social relations, and land and water use that constitute a city. Sound urban development and public policy strategies will play a crucial role in protecting the world’s ecosystems, improving human health, mitigating the effects of climate change, fostering growth and innovation, reducing economic inequality, and providing essential public services in a fiscally responsible manner.

The work of Yale professors David Schleicher, Karen Seto, and David Vlahov spans the fields of law, urbanization, and urban health. Join them for an interdisciplinary exploration of urbanism in the 21st century and a deeper understanding of this urgent global challenge. The conversation will be moderated by Margaret Warner ’71, senior fellow at the Yale Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, and former chief global affairs correspondent at PBS NewsHour, and will conclude with reflections from President Peter Salovey ’86 Ph.D.
