Albury, Australia Meeting Planning Overview

Sitting close to the main road that links Sydney (350 miles to the northeast) and Melbourne (200 miles to the southwest), Albury overlooks the Murray River and the town of Wodonga on the opposite bank (and works in close collaboration with Wodonga). It is also close to the Great Dividing Range, the longest mountain chain in Australia. Wine is grown here, and Albury MICE venues are sure to offer groups the local vintage.

Albury Airport (ABX), three miles to the east of downtown, serves only Sydney and Melbourne but is far quicker than car or the trains that run in both directions twice a day. If one chooses ground transportation, the aforementioned main road, also known as the Hume Highway or the M31, will be the route taken.

Chief among MICE venues, Albury Entertainment Centre has space for receptions of up to 1,000 people; it has 9,000 square feet of meeting space divided into five rooms, plus a 177-seat theater and an 818-seat auditorium, among other spaces.

There are no large MICE hotels in Albury, but local hotels include the 140-room Rydges Albury Wodonga, which has meeting space for up to 170 persons; the 88-room Quality Siesta Resort Albury, which has two meeting rooms; and the 50-room Soden's Hotel Australia, which is more than 150 years old, although thoroughly modern, has a sports book, bar with live entertainment, and function space for 80 persons in a lounge, 100 in a beer garden and 400 in a bistro. Just north of Albury in Lavington is Elizabeth's Manor, which has all manner of Olde Elizabethan English spots in which to organize functions. In Wodonga is the 56-room, motel-style Comfort Inn & Suites Blazing Stump, which has one meeting room.

Unique MICE spots in Albury include the Commercial Club, which has a membership of more than 30,000, as well as oodles of function space, including several meeting rooms and an auditorium for 550 persons, and access to an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse for 60; English pub The Bended Elbow, which is surprisingly modern and also very tasteful and has spaces called The Rooftop Bar, Backyard Balcony, Cocktail Lounge, and the ONE Nightclub, among others; Upper Murray Resort, which has the Wildwood Function & Conference Centre and is set in 350 acres of gorgeous countryside where mountains meet the Murray River. In Wodonga, there is the horse racing-track Wodonga & District Turf Club, which on non-racing days rents out the Maher Members Room for 250 persons, and Blazing Stump Hotel, founded in 1880, which has no guest rooms but does have two meeting rooms, a function room with bar for 140 persons and a beer garden for 200.

Restaurants in the area include fresh, modern Restaurant 579 on Olive at the Quality Hotel on Olive, which also has 60 guest rooms; The Lounge Tapas Bar & Restaurant, which has main dining room space for 60 persons and an upstairs function room for seated parties of 40 persons and receptions of 100; Border Wine Room, which does specialize in local wines and has a Mediterranean menu; Q Manhattans Restaurant and Bar, which has a 1940s New York City theme in the Quest Apartments Hotel; and ZedBar, which has a surf & turf menu and function space for up to 80 persons.
