Catacombs of Kom Al-Shuqqafa

Catacombs of Kom Al-Shuqqafa the Catacombs in Alexandria are so called because the design was very similar to the Christian Catacombs in Rome. Most likely it was a private tomb, later converted to a public cemetery. It consists of 3 levels cut into the rock, a staircase, a rotunda, the triclinium or banquette hall, a vestibule, an antechamber and the burial chamber with three recesses in it; in each recess there is a sarcophagus. The Catacombs also contain a large number of Luculi or grooves cut in the rock.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina also known as Alexandrian Library is a wonderful reincarnation of the famed ancient library of Alexandria. The original library held the largest collection of manuscripts in the world and was a great center of learning for 600 years until it burned down in the 3rd century. The dramatic new library, resembling an angled discus or a great sundial, was designed by a Norwegian architect.

Qaitbay Fort

Qaitbay Fort it was built in 1480 on the ruins of the Alexandria Lighthouse to repel raiders from the Mediterranean. The medieval-style fort was named after the Mamelouk Sultan Qaitbay, and is considered one of Alexandria's landmarks.

Pompey’s Pillar

Pompey’s Pillar an approximately 25 meter red Aswan granite column with a circumference of 9 meter was constructed in honor of the Emperor Diocletain. The Arabs called it "Amoud el-Sawari", Column of the Horsemen. The Pillar is the tallest ancient monument in Alexandria.
