Known as a winter skiing and sports destination, the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee area has all the Alpine flavor—hotels, bright restaurants, amazing views, green valleys and happy, red-cheeked skiers—a tourism brochure could ask for. It comprises the valley road of Zauchenseestrasse, which joins the town of Altenmarkt im Pongau in the north and, approximately eight miles to the south, the ski resort of Zauchensee. The Ski Amade ski resort is the area’s best-known locale. MICE venues in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee are well used to groups of all kinds.
Salzburg has the nearest international airport. Situated on the right side of Salzburg for the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, the airport, Salzburg Airport W.A. Mozart (SZG), is 41 miles to the north and has service only within Europe, to hub airport cities such as Frankfurt, London, Vienna, and Zurich. (Altenmarkt im Pongau is on the rail line to Salzburg, too.)
The Altenmarkt-Zauchensee region does not have a convention center per se; the nearest one being the Sankt Johann Culture & Convention Center, 13 miles to the west along Route 163 and which has space for groups up to 800 persons, or, miles to the east, Congress Schladming, just across the Styria state border in the town of Schladming, which has eight meeting and function areas for up to 2,000 persons, with its largest space able to cater to 1,300.
Altenmarkt-Zauchensee MICE hotels include, in Altenmarkt im Pongau, the 46-room Das Urbisgut, which has space for events of up to 200 persons, and the 30-room Zauchensee Zentral, which also has meeting room for 50 persons, while in Zauchensee are the 80-room Hotel Zauchenseehof, a sibling to the Zauchensee Zentral, with a meeting room for up to 50 persons; the 50-room Salzburgerhof Zauchensee, adjacent to which are the four function rooms for the Alpinseminar Zauchensee, with its largest space, Veranstaltungssaal Amade, able to host up to 500 persons; and the 19-room Hotel Laudersbach, which has two accommodations buildings and two meeting rooms for 20 and 25 persons, respectively.
Private MICE venues in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee include the Heimatmuseen, which chronicles life in this area 100 years ago or more, has lots of rustic artifacts and implements, and contains a large timbered room with wooden seats that can be removed for events; Erlebnis-Therme Amade Spa, which has more than 30,000 square feet of space, two swimming pools, a huge spa and group activities such as black-mud treatments; Alpenrose Zauchensee, a hotel with 42 guest rooms, wellness facilities, restaurant, bar and, right outside, a lake; the facilities, clubhouse, and 9- and 18-hole courses at Golf Club Radstadt, in the next valley to the east, and 25 miles to the west, castle Pongauer Heimatmuseum Schloss Goldegg, along the River Salzach, in a town that goes by the name of Goldegg and which has a white, turreted building and the wonderful Rittersaal hall with beautiful murals, among other atmospheric spots.
Restaurants good for parties and with traditional Austrian cuisine include Zum Steirerwirt; Schartner, in a hotel of the same name that has 30 guest rooms; Die Felserhuette and Die Unterbergalm, both in Zauchensee at the Jausenstation Felserhuette ski center and both siblings to one another, and Krallinger, back in Altenmarkt im Pongau, which is part of a small guesthouse of the same name.
