The Maryland State House

Historical landmark
The beautiful Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and is the only state house to have ever served as the nation's capitol. The Continental Congress met in the Old Senate Chamber from November 26, 1783, to August 13, 1784. During that time, George Washington came before Congress to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the Treaty of Paris was ratified, marking the official end of the Revolutionary War. The State House is where the Maryland General Assembly convenes for three months each year, and the elected leadership of the state — the governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the House of Delegates and president of the Senate — all have their offices there.

US Naval Academy

Historical landmark
The U.S. Naval Academy, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the nation. The graduation hat-toss is perhaps the most famous of all commissioning week traditions. As you explore the 338-acre campus, known as "the Yard," you'll discover that the Naval Academy is defined by such traditions — so much so that the entire campus has been designated a National Historic Landmark. With all that terrain to cover, it’s a good thing the Navy is so welcoming — just be sure to bring a photo ID to Gate 1 in order to gain entrance. The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, located at the foot of King George Street, is the place to start your visit to the Academy. It features an information center, gift shop, a sample midshipmen's room and the "Freedom 7," America’s first manned spacecraft, flown by Naval Academy graduate Alan Shepard. Stop by to view the free film. The Visitor Center also offers walking tours led by Academy guides — the best way to get an insider’s view of the Yard.
