Additional Information

The city of Arraiolos in Alentejo is known above all for its long tradition, passed from generation to generation through the centuries, of the hand embroidered "Tapete de Arraiolos" (Arraiolos Tapestry), the most genuine craftsmanship of the town. With regards to the convents history, it is known that the first stone was placed down on the date of the crowning of D. João III, more precisely on 14th August 1527, the eve of the day of Nossa Senhora Da Assunção (Our Lady of Assumption) as such the convent was dedicated to her.
