A famous summer colony on the coast of Maine, Bar Harbor is one of four villages located on Mount Desert Island. Nestled on the east side of the island, the quaint community surrounded by Acadia National Park has managed to retain the small fishing village feel of its origins while strategically building resorts to host visitors. Bar Harbor event venues are intimate and best suited for small groups (although groups of up to 500 can be accommodated).
Hancock County-Bar Harbor airport is 10 miles from downtown. Cape Air provides year-round, daily nonstop service to Boston and partners with JetBlue. Pen Air provides direct service to Boston in the summer. Bangor International Airport, an hour's drive, is served by Allegiant Air, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. That airport has daily nonstop service to Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, as well as twice weekly service to Orlando/Sanford and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Along with taxi and charter bus transportation from Bangor airport, there is the Bar Harbor Shuttle, which costs $45 per person from Bangor airport. On-island, the free Island Explorer shuttle bus traverses the Bar Harbor area during the summer.
Major meeting venues in Bar Harbor are in hotels. The 189-room Bar Harbor Club can host a meeting for up to 500 people in its 11,000 square feet of function space in six rooms; the 153-room Bar Harbor Inn can host a group of up to 60 people in its 900-square-foot meeting room; the 153-room Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Conference Center offers 10,000 square feet of function space in 10 rooms, with the ability to accommodate 500 people theater-style; and the 97-room Bluenose Inn offers two function rooms; one to host a meeting for 35 people and another to host 65 people.
Three of the most popular unique venues in Bar Harbor for off-site functions play off quintessentially New England experiences. Bar Harbor Lobster Bakes will stage a traditional Down East lobster bake for up to 150 people in its restaurant, and for groups of 25 to 500 at outdoor locations around the community. By sea, a group of up to 200 people can board a Bar Harbor Whale Watch vessel to see everything from migrating whales, dolphins, and puffins, to lobster boats at work and classic Maine coast lighthouses.
Of the more than 50 restaurants in Bar Harbor, fresh seafood is the prime draw of establishments like The Thirsty Whale Tavern, a local hang-out, and the Fish House Grill, which is on the harbor and known for its raw bar. And two of the top fine-dining restaurants are The Looking Glass, overlooking Frenchman's Bay, and The Reading Room, popular for private functions on the harbor. There are also some unexpected dining options, such as the group-friendly Jordan Pond House, serving the popovers and jam that are a local tradition, and Havana, a fine-dining restaurant that prepares its Latin cuisine using local ingredients.
All average costs based on U.S. Government Per Diem rates as published by the U.S. General Services Administration.
