Berlin, Germany Airport Information

Berlin Schonefeld Airport (SXF)

Approximate taxi fare: 45 EUR

Located about 20 kilometers from downtown Berlin in the town of Schönefeld in Brandenburg, the Berlin Schonefeld Airport sees about 6.6 million passengers per year and is a major hub for EasyJet and Germanwings. Along with Tegel Airport in the northwest, Schönefeld operates flights to Berlin from 112 destinations in 44 countries on 75 different airlines. The airport offers many amenities such as a children's playground, post office, business center, ground-floor shopping mall and numerous bars and restaurants.

Air travel to and from Berlin is about to change drastically with the creation of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport. As bold and modern as the city itself, the new "airport of the future" will offer travelers a high-tech hub with ideal connections, international flights, direct motorway access and a rail station under the main terminal.

Slated to be completed in 2011, the new airport will be just a short 20-minute trip from the Berlin city center via underground rail. It will be capable of serving 20 million passengers initially, with plans for double that number in the future. Additionally, Berlin Brandenburg International will greatly improve life for Berlin residents, as its construction has prompted the planned closures of Tegel and Tempelhof airports. By closing these airports, hundreds of thousands of Berlin and Brandenburg residents no longer have to live with aircraft noise. Tempelhof was closed in October 2008 and Tegel is scheduled to close in 2011.

Berlin, Germany Train Information

Berlin Hauptbahnhof Station

Berlin can be reached from every direction via the InterCityExpress-, InterCity-, EuroCity- and InterRegio Trains. Berlin's new central station Hauptbahnhof opened in 2006. All stations are conveniently connected to the BVG public transportation system.

Berlin, Germany Public Transportation

BVG

Berlin has an integrated public transportation system known as the BVG. Consisting of public buses, underground rails known as "U-Bahn," and surface rails known as "S-Bahn," this fast and efficient interconnected system allows passengers to hop from network to network using only one ticket.

Berlin is divided into three transport zones A, B and C, but for most travel purposes, zones A and B are sufficient. Zone A is surrounded by the S-Bahn ring and covers the center of the city. Zone B ends at the city limits of Berlin, while Zone C encompasses nearby destinations such as Berlin Schonefeld Airport, Potsdam and Oranienburg.

The BVG operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Single ticket fares are €2.10 for zones A and B. Children ages 6-14 receive a reduced fare of €1.40. Children under six ride free with an accompanying adult.

Rental Cars

Driving in Berlin is surprisingly easy compared to other European cities. The roadways are wide, signposts are prominent and traffic is nominal. As part of Berlin's many green initiatives, the inner city is an "environmental zone" where only cars that are up to emission standards are allowed. Drivers need a sticker with information about the emissions standard of the car.

Rental car pick up is available at Berlin Schonefeld Airport through Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and SIXT. Agency counters are located at the pavilion in front of Terminal A.

Taxis

More than 7,000 taxis operate throughout Berlin 24 hours a day. Taxi stands can be found at all main stations and airports as well as hotels. Most Berlin taxi drivers speak English, but not all.

For shorter taxi rides, travelers can opt for the "hailing fare" (available only when hailing a passing taxi, not from a taxi rank) by which a short journey only costs €4. Passengers must ask the taxi driver for this fare at the start of the journey.
