The second-busiest airport in the U.S., O'Hare International Airport is 17 miles west of downtown Chicago and 30 minutes outside of Chicago North Shore. O'Hare International is the nation's only dual-hub airport, serving as the hub for both United and American Airlines. Currently undergoing a $6.6-billion modernization program, O'Hare International served more than 76 million passengers in 2006. Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) system includes rapid transit "L" lines and busses. Serving more than 1.6 million riders on an average weekday, CTA service runs throughout Chicago and 40 surrounding communities. Riders can access Chicago North Shore's Evanston via the Purple Line and can take the Yellow Line to Skokie. The CTA Yellow Line runs Monday through Friday from 5 AM to 11:15 PM and Saturday through Sunday from 6:30 AM to 11:15 PM, while the CTA Purple Line runs Monday through Friday from 4:50 to 1:45 AM, Saturday from 5:30 to 2:15 AM and Sunday from 6:30 to 1:45 AM. CTA full cash fare is $2.25 for adults and $1 for children ages 7 to 11. A daily pass is $5.75, while a three-day pass is $14 and a seven-day pass is $23. A seven-day CTA and Pace combined pass is $28. Children under 7 ride free.
Pace Suburban Bus Service
Chicago's Pace Suburban bus service serves more than 220 communities in a six-county area. Consisting of nearly 200 bus routes, Pace's fixed route network provides direct connections to and from CTA and Metra. Base fare is $1.75 for adults and $0.85 for children ages 7 to 11, while a 10-ride pass is $17.50 for adults and $8.50 for children. A seven-day Pace and CTA combined pass is $28. Children under 7 ride free.
Metra
Serving more than 100 northeast Illinois communities, Metra is a suburban commuter rail service that spans 241 stations in a six-county area, as well as 11 lines from downtown Chicago. Metra's Union Pacific North Line runs from downtown Chicago to Evanston, while the Milwaukee District North Line runs between downtown Chicago to Glenview and Northbrook. Metra fares are determined by zone. One-way, 10-ride and monthly unlimited passes are available for purchase.
Amtrak
Chicago North Shore's Amtrak station is located at 1116 Depot Street in Glenview. The Empire Builder line, which provides daily service between Chicago and Seattle, as well as the Hiawatha line, which provides 14 daily trips between Chicago and Milwaukee, serve the station. The station is open daily from 5:15 AM to 8:30 PM.
