...Considered one of the greatest Rococo masterpieces throughout all of Europe, Copenhagen's Amalienborg Palace serves as the official winter residence for the Danish monarch. The palace consists of four Rococo manors built between 1750 and 1758, placed around an octagonal square and equestrian statue of King Frederik V. Originally belonging to four noble families, the palace grounds were built by the monarch in 1794 after the Christiansborg Palace was ravaged by fire.
Today, the palace houses the Amalienborg Museum, which examines Danish history from 1863 to 1972 and is guarded day and night by the Royal Danish Life Guards. The changing of the royal guards can be seen every day at noon; the length of the guard route and amount of music played during the ceremony is determined by those in residence.
Amalienborg Palace is open to the public with hours varying based on season. Admission is DKK 55 for adults. Admission for children under 18 is free. Guided tours are offered at an additional charge.

...The Statue of the Little Mermaid, a national landmark synonymous with the city of Copenhagen, is one of the most famous and popular attractions in Denmark. The five-foot-tall mermaid, symbolizing the famous fairy tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, sits on a rock near the shore at Langelinie at Copenhagen Harbor, wistfully looking toward the shore.
Crafted by sculptor Edvard Eriken, the statue was given to the city by the Carlsberg family on August 23, 1913, as part of the city's trend to decorate its parks and public places with classical and historical figures and symbols. The Statue of the Little Mermaid's August 23 birthday is an annual event. Marking the occasion are a parade and a crowd of young and adult women who jump in the waters surrounding the statue and together shape the number of its current age.
