More
The Pousada do Crato, Flor da Rosa Historic Hotel is localized right in Alentejo, and installed in the old Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa Monastery. D. Alvaro Goncalves Pereira, Grand Prior to the Hospital and also the father of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, had the building erected in the fourteenth century. In this important gothic national monument, you feel the spirits of medieval times in every corner taking us back to the time of the building of a new nation. This luxury hotel in Crato is an example of the recovery of a Historic building into modern times without losing the monastic feel, calm and peaceful. Designed by the Portuguese architect Carrilho da Graça, we encounter at this Pousada a group of distinctive buildings, constructed in distant eras, like the gothic castled court, a Manueline gothic church and also convent Renaissance and Mudejar compartments. The Pousada is endowed with 24 rooms three of which are situated in the monastery tower, offering their guests the comforts of a modern hotel – cable TV, air conditioning and a mini bar. The rooms in the convent area are all distinctive in their form and configuration with charm and comfort being the common element. In the new part of this contemporary hotel design the quarters are illuminated and decorated in modern styling in which welcoming colours and dark wood furniture predominate. Outside there is a pool with a sun terrace which allows their guests a refreshing and clam moment to reenergize whilst listening to the sounds of the Alentejo plains. The richness of the Alentejo cuisine cannot be missed, in the Pousada’s restaurant where pezinhos de coentrada (a pork dish with coriander) Coentrada de Cação (dogfish and coriander) or Ensopado de Borrego (lamb stew) are their highlights. These dishes accompanied by a beautiful wine of the Alentejo region, are the true pleasures of life.
Additional Information
At the beginning of the twelfth century the Order of the Hospital was introduced into Portugal, known as the Malta Order. It was created to help the pilgrims on their pilgrimage to the Holy Land and later was turned into the military order. A century later the Order’s headquarters of Portugal settled itself in Vila do Crato, which later became the head of the prior.
