The Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District received a “Great Places in America” award for Excellence In Planning - Neighborhoods from the American Planning Association (APA) on Oct. 4, 2011. These national awards include categories of streets, neighborhoods and public spaces, and The Gold Coast/Hamburg District is the first in Iowa to receive the neighborhood award! One of Iowa’s largest historic districts it received national designation as an historic district in 1984. Known as Davenport's first neighborhood it was home to many of Davenport’s early German settlers beginning in the mid-19th century. A portion of the neighborhood is located in Davenport’s Original Town section, within the earliest boundaries established by the city when it was chartered in 1836. The historic homes of the Gold Coast & Hamburg Historic District contain some of the oldest and most significant architectural styles in the State of Iowa.

German Heritage Society

Enjoy an interactive experience as you learn about millions of German immigrants’ journey by sea, train and foot, to their final destination at the German American Heritage Center building, which was originally a very busy hotel for thousands of immigrants in the 1860s.The 1900 U.S. Census documented that over half the citizens in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota were German immigrants or their descendents. Scott County, where the first passenger railroad crossed the Mississippi River, was the entry point for many immigrants to the upper Midwest region and points west. In 1900, Joseph Eiboeck, a veteran German newspaperman, described Davenport as, “the most German city, not only in the State, but in all the Middle West, the center of all German activities in the State”.
