Originally opened in 1917, the Fort Shelby Hotel represented the exuberance and growth of early 20th century Detroit. It quickly became one of Detroit's top luxury hotels and was expanded in 1927 with the addition of a 22-story tower designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn in the Beaux-Arts style. Named after a revolutionary war era fort that was located near the site, the Fort Shelby was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. After being out of service for decades, the building has undergone a painstaking restoration to once again stand as the premier downtown Detroit hotel.
