Pyramid of Austerlitz

Historical landmark
9 km away
The "Pyramid of Austerlitz" is located at the highest point of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The monument dates from the time of Napoleon in the early 1800s. In 1804 General Marmont had the pyramid built by the Franco-Batavian army, in tribute to his friend and example Napoleon Bonaparte. Inspired by his campaign to Egypt, Marmont chose a pyramid crowned with an obelisk. This obelisk was made of wood and quickly fell into disrepair. Napoleon's brother Louis Napoleon, at that time king of Holland, gave the monument the name “Pyramid of Austerlitz” after the battle in today's Czech Republic. A new obelisk was built in stone in 1894, but the pyramid itself was hardly restored. Obelisk In 1876 Anna Alida bought Stoop, Dowager A.J. de Beaufort, the Pyramid with inn and land. The tavern was then rented to Dirk van Kolfschoten, whose descendants still lease the tavern. Due to the increasing tourism, the café was steadily expanded with various buildings, a large terrace and a covered miniature motorway. The "Pyramid of Austerlitz" became a household name and a compulsory number for school trips for generations. Until a few years ago, only the stone obelisk on the top of the Pyramid was visible, due to the fact that over the years little maintenance had been done to the monument. Various government agencies, in collaboration with the French government, have decided that the monument must remain a monument. In mid 2000 it was decided to renovate the whole, with the forest around it, with the ultimate result that the “pyramid” under the stone obelisk has become visible again

House Doorn

Museum
2 km away
House Doorn was the residence of the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II. After the German defeat in the First World War, Wilhelm fled to the neutral Netherlands and he lived on this estate in the Utrecht province from 1920 to 1941. In 1919, Wilhelm bought House Doorn, which was originally a 14th century moated castle but had been converted into an elegant country house at the end of the 18th century. Wilhelm renovated the House and made some changes to the estate, which covers 35 hectares and is in the style of an English landscape garden. In 1920, 59 train wagons transported around 30,000 objects to the Netherlands from Wilhelm’s palaces in Berlin and Potsdam to furnish the House. Splendid furniture, paintings, silver and porcelain enabled the royal asylum-seeker to keep up his former lifestyle. Wilhelm lived in House Doorn from 1920-1941. Today, this imperial residence-in-exile is a museum, with 3 floors and 12 rooms that are all open to the public. The original interior is still intact and offers visitors an authentic view of an international royal residence and lifestyle. During guided tours, the history of the Kaiser, his era and art collection is brought to life. You can see a preview of House Doorn with this panoramic tour. The House (the residence of the last German Emperor Wilhelm II) can only be visited by guided tour (except on the last three Sundays of the month, then you can visit the house on your own). Tours start several times per hour, so you never have to wait long. A tour takes about one hour. At the desk in the House, you will be informed what time your tour will start. The last tour of the day will begin at 16.00 h. English guided tours are only available on request for groups from ten or more people. In the Pavilion is an exhibition on the Netherlands during the First World War. There are no guided tours of the Pavilion, so you can visit the exhibition in your own time. Here guided tours are available only by prior arrangement. Every Sunday you can visit the House on your own. Hosts and hostesses will answer any questions you may have. Group reservations can be requested. Schools and groups can visit the Museum outside of opening hours. Outside regular opening times, special rates are applied. If you want to make a reservation please contact us via reserveringen@huisdoorn.nl.
