Durbanville, South Africa Meeting Planning Overview

Surrounded by farm land and vines, Durbanville is the last suburb of Cape Town as Route 1 speeds off towards Stellenbosch and the rest of South Africa. This original name of this historical, agricultural town, Pampoenkraal, means "enclosure of pumpkins" in Afrikaans; its modern, English name comes from the same source as the name of larger city Durban, from the last name of a Cape Colony governor called D'Urban. With a growing, well educated and relatively affluent population, Durbanville event venues can be found in Tygervalley Shopping Centre, one of the largest in the nation, and in the newly developed Tygervalley Waterfront.

The closest international airport is Cape Town International Airport (CPT), which is one of the two most important, busy and well-served airports in South Africa, with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and all around South Africa itself, but not from North America.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre is the closest of large-scale venues in Durbanville environs; it has 100,000 square feet of exhibit space on its ground floor, big enough to host 10,000 persons, as well as two auditoriums (the first seating 600 persons, the second, 1,500); 33 meeting rooms and a 20,000-square-foot ballroom.

The larger hotel venues in Durbanville's area are in downtown Cape Town, but nice choices with meeting space on a much smaller scale (some surrounded by countryside) include the 32-room Ruslamere Guest House, Spa & Conference Centre, which has event space for up to 80 persons; six-room Kolping Guest House & Conference Centre, which has meeting space for 50 persons; and three-room Castile Guest House & Conference Centre, which has a meeting room for 15 persons. The Whistling Pines Boutique Guest House & Conference Centre is worth finding for its terrace view of Table Mountain alone, but it also has six suites and meeting space for up to a dozen persons, as well as lots of outdoor space, while the Traduire Guest Lodge & Conference Centre has five suites and also a meeting room for 12 persons.

Special event meeting venues in Durbanville feature trim, neat, memorable facilities with great views, vistas and food. Try Hillcrest Farm, which is in the Tygerberg Mountains, with its own vineyards and wine, as well as a restaurant (and its own quarry) with a permanent tent for 200 persons and Table Mountain views. Other choices include another winery, Durbanville Hills, which has a wonderful tasting room and space for 100 persons for dinner, 140 for receptions; Durbanville Golf Club, with a club house, a restaurant and conference space for up to 200 persons; Rust-en-Vrede, which in the 1840s was a prison and police headquarters but now is a very pretty Afrikaans-style art museum with a cafe and three galleries for events; and Butterfly World, in the suburb if Klapmuts, which has a 10,000-square-foot butterfly hothouse and a restaurant and cafe for events.

Restaurant venues in Durbanville able to look after groups include the Die Boer, which has an informal atmosphere, great wine and food and live bands and theater; much, much quieter The Mount, which serves up fine views, meat, curry and fish dishes and private functions of up to 40 persons; Cafe Chameleon, another formal spot that specializes in oven pizza and has great views of Table Mountain; Poplars Restaurant at the D'Aria Estate in the hills above Durbanville, which has private seating for up to 30 persons, as well as a tent, a deck, 12 guest cottages and a conference hall; and, even higher up in the hills and away from it all, Bloemendal, which has room for private parties of 250, with an additional 350 if a tent is set up, and has amazing views and Medieval-theme dinners.
