Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Museum
1 hour away
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is regarded as one of Europe's most important museums. The present building was constructed between 1933 and 1937 to plans by P. Karantinos, on the site of the imposing Venetian Franciscan friary destroyed by an earthquake in 1856. The museum brings together archaeological finds from all over Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island's history. Pride of place is given to the treasures of Minoan civilisation, the entire historical course of which can thus be appreciated.

The island of Spinalonga (also known as Kalydon) is located in East Crete off the coast of mainland Crete close to the villages of Elounda and Plaka in the Lasithi region. The award winning and best selling book The Island by Victoria Hislop is set on the island and shares the fictional story of a family's ties to the former leper colony. The island of Spinalonga is an ancient fortress first built to protect ancient Olous (Elounda), once one of the most important towns on Crete, especially between 3000-900 BC. Later in the 16th century the Venetians built a fortress on Spinalonga over the ruins of an acropolis and it was considered impregnable.

"Panagia Kera" Byzantine Church

Historical landmark
20 minutes away
One kilometer before the village of Kritsa, in the site named "Logari" is the old Byzantine church of "Panagia Kera", with unique in technique and importance Byzantine frescoes (14th and 15th century). The central aisle, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, contains the oldest paintings which reflect a mixture of styles. The south aisle has the best-preserved paintings. In contrast to the more stylized paintings of the period, these paintings display a tenderness and humanity in their rendering of the story of Anna, the Virgin Mary's mother. The north aisle is dedicated to St. Anthony and has pictures representing the Second Coming.
