Additional Information

The now Pousada dos Loios was the S. João Evangelista Monastery or Monastery of Loios. It was founded in 1487 by the 1st Count of Olivença, D. Rodrigo Melo and constructed under license by D. João II on lands where part of the Arabic Castle of Évora used to stand. This castle was in complete ruins having suffered a fire during the 1383-85 revolution, due to battles supporting D. João, Master of Avis, who was to ascend to the throne as D. João I.
