Maropeng

Museum
In the centre of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, and only 10km from the Sterkfontein Caves where some of the most significant palaeoanthropological finds of all time have been made, the award-winning Maropeng Visitor Centre brings the story of humankind’s evolution to life. The Maropeng Visitor Centre lies on the side of a hill among ancient rocky outcrops, and has been designed to appear to arriving visitors as a 20m-high grass-covered tumulus (ancient burial mound). In addition to the visitor centre, Maropeng has a fully equipped conference centre, a 24-bedroom boutique hotel, several eateries and a bar, a Kiddies' Cave, and an outdoor amphitheatre that can seat up to 5 000 people. There is also affordable accommodation for students and tour groups at Hominid House. To get to the Tumulus Building, visitors move through a sunken marketplace, a site of excavation where hundreds of Stone Age tools were found during the construction of Maropeng (Setswana for "returning to the place of our origins"). The marketplace has a ticket office and restaurant, as well as a curio shop and a number of craft stalls. Inside the Tumulus Building, the voyage of discovery begins with a journey going back 4-billion years in time to the formation of our planet. Visitors are then taken on a multi-sensory boat ride on an underground lake, experiencing the elements coming together in the formation of our planet. After the boat ride, visitors begin the journey back to the present, tracking the path of life from the single-celled organisms of 4-billion years ago to the variety of life in the 21st century. The “theatre of life” exhibit enlightens visitors about the formation of the Sterkfontien Caves, human evolution, our impact on the Earth, and more. There are also original fossil finds on display. RECREATION AFRICA LEISURE INDUSTRIES (PTY) LTD - PROFILE Our investment in the hospitality industry began some 20 years ago. Misty Hills Country Hotel, Conference Centre & Spa, together with the Carnivore restaurant, have grown in reputation and status and have become favoured destinations for many. The group is distinctly African in flavour and we have consciously endeavoured to promote African art, culture, cuisine and hospitality at every level. We offer a proudly “African” experience. The materials and furnishings we have used in creating our hotels and restaurants are truly African in origin, we have planted indigenous gardens and the products that we use in our hotel rooms, and at our spas, are crafted out of African herbs and oils. The Misty Hills Spa in the Country, overlooking the Kromdraai Valley, was conceived and designed as an African sanctuary. Guests are pampered in a serene environment that encourages relaxation and personal rejuvenation. The Carnivore restaurant, situated in the grounds of Misty Hills Country Hotel, needs little introduction.
