Germiston, just as its neighboring Boksburg, saw its origins in the Johannesburg Gold Rush of the late 19th century. Today, that heritage continues in its Rand Refinery, the largest gold processor on the planet, responsible for something in the region of 70 percent of the gold seen in the Western World; indeed, there are approximately 700 industrial businesses here. It still shows many excellent examples of Victorian architecture, paid for with all that mineral wealth, with many Germiston event venues.
Germiston's airport is OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), which is 12 miles to its northeast. Flights arrive from all over the world, including ones from Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC-Dulles.
As with all of Johannesburg's neighborhoods, Germiston's convention center is the Sandton Convention Center, which has 220,000 square feet of function space on four levels that can cater up to 10,000 persons; also included is The Pavilion, which can host up to 4,500 on its own. However, Germiston also is close to the Gallagher Convention Centre, in Midrand, which is home to the Pan-African Parliament, and contains five exhibition halls covering 270,000 square feet of space, as well as an auditorium for 400 persons, Estate Ballroom for 1,200, seven meeting rooms and Wine Garden Restaurant, among other spaces.
There are few hotel venues in Germiston, as it is too busy producing 18-carat nuggets and has only one hotel able to accommodate meetings, the 11-room S'tiba Guesthouse, which has on its top floor a conference facility beneath its thatched roof. The other properties directly in the area do not have meeting space, but travel a little farther and the following excellent hotels, all able to host events, will be found in Boksburg the 665-room Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre, which has rooms for conferences of up to 1,500 persons, and 151-room Airport Grand Hotel Conference Centre, which has meeting space for up to 120 persons and in Kempton Park, the 366-room Southern Sun OR Tambo International Airport, which has eight meeting spaces for up to 530 persons, and 196-room Peermont D'oreale Grande at Emperors Palace Hotel, Casino & Convention Resort, which has a Las Vegas feel to it, is part of the Emperor's Palace hotel and entertainment complex and has an art gallery, several restaurants and lots of outdoor nooks and crannies for events.
However, there are many special event venues in Germiston; the first, Reading Country Club, with 18 holes of golf, private bar and two meeting areas, one for 60 people, the other for 120; and the second, Victoria Lake Club, on the edge of Germiston Lake, with sailing, canoeing and other water sports and function spaces such as a dining room, tented hall, deck and lakeside lawns. Other choices include the city's architecturally interesting, award-winning Civic Centre, which can host up to 500 persons in the amphitheater of the Ekurhileni Council Chamber, the seat of Germiston and area's municipal government; Harvard Cafe Restaurant & Conference Centre, which is at the private Rand Airport and has private spaces such as the Spammy Room for 40 persons and the Texan Room for 250; and, also at the airport, the restaurant and function rooms at the South African Airways Museum Society.
Near Gemiston, Alberton has some nice dining choices, including Boma, which has numerous African touches, 450 seats and a conference center for 230 persons; Barrels, which has function spaces and live music; De Landauer's, which has Afrikaans heritage and has a pretty outdoor section beneath a thatched roof and by a garden; Borisimo's, which has 13 guest rooms and an excellent restaurant with very well presented fare; and Italian restaurant Allora, with a pizza oven, sophisticated food and a formal atmosphere; both these last two suggestions are in Bedfordview, adjacent to Germiston.
