In the San Fernando Valley, bordering Burbank and Pasadena, Glendale is home to two American icons—the Bob's Big Boy burger chain, which started here in 1936, and Baskin-Robbins ice cream, which started here nine years later.
Bob Hope Airport, the nearest airport, approximately six miles northwest of the center of Glendale, mostly serves West Coast destinations but does have direct flights to Denver and New York City's John F. Kennedy; it also has a direct train link (the only airport in the whole Los Angeles Metropolitan area to do so) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is approximately 30 miles to the south.
As with most parts of Los Angeles, the closest and largest convention center to Glendale is the Los Angeles Convention Center, which is eight miles to the south. It has 720,000 square feet of exhibit space and 147,000 square feet of meeting space.
Hotel venues include the 351-room Hilton Los Angeles North/Glendale, with 19,000 square feet of function space, including a ballroom for 850 persons; and the 272-room Embassy Suites Los Angeles-Glendale, with 5,000 square feet of meeting space. The 40-room Brandwood is an excellent boutique choice and will soon have meeting space.
Event venues in Glendale include the Spanish Revival-style Glendale Civic Auditorium. Built in 1938, it is actually two auditoriums, the Upper with 11,000 square feet of space, and the Lower with 14,000. Locals are very proud of the Brand Library & Art Center, which has the Recital Room for events hosting up to 150 persons. It occupies Brand Park, as does the "Shoseian" Whispering Pine Teahouse & Friendship Garden, the garden of which can be rented. The Doctor's House, which was built in 1888, also has garden space for rental. The Alex Theatre has 1,413 seats and can be rented in its entirety. Another theater for rental is the Behind the Stars Palace, which has a cafe, a stage, 500 seats and a gallery.
Palate, one of the unique dining venues in Glendale, occupies the ground floor of the seven-story, former Bekins moving depot from the 1920s. Private parties can be held in its Library (14 persons), Lounge (28) and Cellar (60). Minx is gaining many plaudits for its food, as well as its dining room (150 sitting, 225 standing), lounge (50; 75), club room with dance floor, patio (130; 200) and cabanas (15 in each). Anoush is a very celebrated catering company with Mediterranean and Armenian cuisine that has five private banquet halls, three of them being in Glendale: The Glenoaks for 450 persons, the Galleria for 250 and the Galleria Lounge for 16.
