Additional Information

The island of Faial belongs to a group of 9 islands of the Açores’ Archipelago. It was discovered in the first half of the fifteenth century and population of this started in 1460. In 1498 it was elevated to the status of ‘town’ by king D. Manuel I and on 4th July 1833 to ‘city’. At present it has as a county, the city of Horta, a name it got from the surname of Joss Van Hurtere, the First Captain Grantee. The entrance to the fort was reconstructed in 1847; this date can be found above the fort’s gate.
