Dolmabahce Palace was built by Sultan Abdulmecid (1839-1861) who was the thirty first Ottoman Sultan. Dolmabahce Palace was home to six Sultans from 1856, when it was first inhabited, up until the abolition of the Caliphate in 1924. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey, used the palace as a presidential residence during the summers and enacted some of his most important works here. The world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier is in the center hall. The chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tonnes. Dolmabahce has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world, and one of the great staircases has balusters of Baccarat crystal.

It has also been called “the eighth wonder of the world” by East Roman Philon as far back as the 6th century. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is an historical mosque in Istanbul. The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. The many lamps inside the mosque were once covered with gold and gems.[5] Among the glass bowls one could find ostrich eggs and crystal balls.[6] All these decorations have been removed or pillaged for museums. The great tablets on the walls are inscribed with the names of the caliphs and verses from the Quran, originally by the great 17th-century calligrapher Seyyid Kasim Gubari of Diyarbakır, but they have frequently been restored.
