Karlsaue Park Orangerie

Museum
9 minutes away
Landgrave Carl (reign 1670/77–1730) had another, prominent masterpiece of garden landscaping realised nearly at the same time as the work on the Carlsberg hill, the Hercules Monument and Cascades in the immediate vicinity of the old Residence Palace. On the plain along the Fulda River, he replaced a small folly built by Wilhelm IV. (reign 1567–1592) with a larger Orangerie Palace, which was built from 1701 to 1710. .. Large portions of the Karlsaue Park were destroyed in Second World War. The Orangerie Palace was entirely consumed by flames, only the Marble Bath remained. While the Bundesgartenschau (German Federeal Horticulture Show) in 1955 provided an initial impulse for designing the grounds around the palace, the ruins of the Orangerie were used as a backdrop for the barren staging of artworks during the documenta II in 1959...

Wilhelmshöhe Castle and Berg Park

Museum
14 minutes away
The baroque building complex with the monumental castle, statue of Hercules and ornamental water displays was created in the beginning of the 18th century. After the Seven Years War it was redesigned as a landscape garden. Around the axis of the cascade, an extensive and idealized natural landscape with waterfalls, aqueduct and sprout has been created. The Wilhelmshöhe Berg Park is unique throughout the world. It covers an area of 240 hectares and extends to the Habichtswald nature reserve. Part of the park - 100 hectares - is also an official health resort. The park itself contains over 600 different types of trees and is regarded as Europe's largest hillside park. The palace and the park served as summer residence until 1866, first for the Landgraves and Electors of Hessen-Kassel, later for Prussian Kings and German Emperors. Opening Hours: WILHELMSHOHE BERG PARK: opened all year around WILHELMSHÖHE CASTEL: Tuesday - Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm

documenta

10 minutes away
The documenta exhibition in Kassel is famous worldwide. The world’s most important exhibition of contemporary art attracts huge crowds of visitors from different countries. Every five years the documenta puts on an exhibition of contemporary trends in modern art as well as providing a forum for new exhibition concepts. Who would have dreamt the documenta would become so successful when the first exhibition, devised by Arnold Bode, was opened in 1955? Among the ruins of the Fridericianum Museum, which was destroyed during WW2, Bode presented exhibits depicting the development of fine art at the beginning of the 20th century which were banned from exhibition during the Nazi regime. The 1955 exhibition deliberately emphasized the pan-European phenomenon of Modern Classicism. Today, the documenta continues to bring together a range of artistic worlds, thereby also contributing to the history of art. documenta 14 10. June till 17. September 2017

GRIMM WORLD Kassel

Museum
11 minutes away
Practically everybody has heard of the Brothers Grimm... ... and connects them with memories going back far into childhood. With their collection of Children’s and Household Tales, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm have made their mark on many generations. But that is not the full extent of their merits by far. They were important linguistsand are considered to be the founders of German language studies. They belonged to the Göttingen Seven, and in 1848 Jacob Grimm was a member of the National Assembly at St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt. Their brother Ludwig Emil Grimm was a renowned painter and illustrator as well as an important chronicler of the Grimms’life and work. The GRIMM WORLD Kassel will pay worthy tribute to all these aspects.
