La Purisima Mission State Park

Historical landmark
4 mi. away
Founded in 1787, the La Purisima Mission land holdings once covered nearly 470 square miles. Bordered by the Santa Maria River in the North and the Gaviota coastline in the South, the land was home to the Chumash people and Spanish settlers. The mission was best known for its hides and blankets, and at its peak inhabitants herded as many as 24,000 cattle and sheep. Today, history lives at La Purisima. The most extensively restored mission in the state, La Purisima hosts over 200,000 visitors each year for recreation and a chance to explore California's heritage. We are open nearly every day for self-guided tours, and frequently the park provides a re-creation of life here during the 1820's, when the residents engaged in weaving, pottery making, candle making, blacksmithing, livestock production, and leatherwork. In addition to the restored original buildings, the nearly 2,000 acre park is home to 25 miles of hiking trails, a modern Visitor Center and Exhibit Hall, and livestock. This website is presented by Prelado de los Tesoros de la Purisima. Our name, loosely translated, means "Keepers of the Treasures of La Purisima." We invite you to explore the website's three main areas: Visit, Learn, and Join. The Visit menu explains how best to experience the mission for yourself, including driving directions, building maps, and an extensive photo gallery. The audience for the Learn menu is students and teachers. Each year we are a destination for thousands of children as part of our Student Learning History Days program. The Join menu explains how you can become part of the Mission experience. Prelado is a non-profit, volunteer organization that assists the staff at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park preserve history and provide quality educational programs for park visitors.

Lompoc Wine Ghetto

Recreation
5 minutes away
The Central Coast's original urban wine destination, where artisanal winemakers pour for passionate wine lovers. The Lompoc wine trail started out as a community of urban wineries in an industrial setting with the distinction of offering fine handcrafted wines. Considered the western gateway to the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, the wineries and tasting rooms of Lompoc are primarily located in an industrial park affectionately known as the “Lompoc Wine Ghetto.” Today Lompoc has the one of the largest concentrations of world-class, small-producer tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County, making a wide variety of wines and styles. This makes Lompoc an easy and exciting destination for your wine tasting get-away! Ironically, Lompoc was founded as a temperance colony in 1874. When the town was incorporated as the city of Lompoc in 1888, the temperance clause written into every deed was found to be unenforceable; temperance was officially over. No doubt, temperance was difficult to enforce with the influx of Portuguese, Italian and other immigrants who were accustomed to their own home winemaking. The Lompoc Valley’s tradition of growing grapes and making wine dates back to the Mission period, from approximately 1787-1835. La Purisima Mission had its own vineyard for the production of wines for sacramental offerings and other general use. Their pear brandy was prized worldwide. In 1971 the first two vineyards were planted in what would become the Sta. Rita Hills AVA: Sanford and Benedict Vineyard and Lafond Vineyard. While in Lompoc, stroll the area to find the more than 60 murals created by local artists on buildings throughout town; play golf at the La Purisima Golf Course, one of the top public coursed in California; head down to Jalama Beach for legendary waves, burgers, and camping; and experiencing living history at the La Purisima Mission, one of 21 missions in California. And of course, visit our award-winning artisan wineries in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto.
