Loudoun County is 25 miles west of the nation's capital, in the center of a thriving community of Fortune 500 companies near Washington Dulles International Airport. Groups looking for a traditional retreat in the Mid-Atlantic region could hardly find a better one: Loudoun County is Washington, DC's wine country, as well as Virginia's horse country. Loudoun County event venues include historic homes and the largest conference center in the U.S.
The home of Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun County is located in the northern Virginia foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The airport, which is about 15 miles from Leesburg, offers a full range of domestic and international flights.
Chief among conference venues in Loudoun County, the 917-room National Conference Center features 250 meeting rooms for groups of 10 to 1,800. Hotel venues in Loudoun County are found in two areas: Leesburg and near Dulles airport. The largest property in Leesburg is the 126-room Clarion Inn – Leesburg, which can handle meetings of 300 people and is attached to a historical, circa 1747 mansion. Located in the Dulles Technology Corridor near the airport are such hotels as the newly renovated 368-room Washington Dulles Airport Marriott, which provides 11 function rooms; and the 297-room Holiday Inn Washington Dulles, which can host a meeting for up to 400 people in its ten function rooms and is adjacent to the Executive Conference & Training Center (which has 5,000 square feet of meeting space but no guest rooms).
In wine country, the 296-room resort Lansdowne Resort just became the seventh in Destination Hotels & Resorts' portfolio of IAAC-certified properties. In 2013, the 167-room Salamander Resort & Spa will feature 12,000 square feet of meeting space and registered to become one of the first LEED-certified resorts in the nation.
Special event venues in Loudoun County focus on the history and the wine country character of the region. Sunset Hills Vineyard has a 1870s era barn (faithfully restored by Amish craftsmen), which has 3,000 square feet of function space. The Stable at Bluemont Vineyard is a precisely restored stable high on a hill among vineyards that can host a party for 250 people. And Hillsborough Vineyards has a vast stone patio encircling an historic stone barn overlooking the Loudoun Valley that can handle several hundred people.
Along with wineries, there are a large number of historic homes available for private group functions. Murray Hill, a stately 18th-century stone manor house, sits on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River a few minutes from historic Leesburg. Rust Manor House is surrounded by formal gardens and sits on 68 wooded acres on the outskirts of Leesburg. The Thomas Birkby House is located in the heart of the Leesburg historic district. Red Fox Inn, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, allots three of its five dining rooms to private parties. Oatlands Plantation, a 350-acre estate that is a National Trust site, features four acres of English terraced gardens and a carriage house that can host an event of up to 250 people.
In Loudoun County, fine food is often coupled with meticulously restored structures. In historic Leesburg, Lightfoot Restaurant is situated in a restored bank building and Tuscarora Mill is a contemporary American restaurant located in a restored 19th-century grain mill. The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm in Lovettville features a glass conservatory and gazebo overlooking the Potomac River and Goodstone Inn & Estate's restaurant is located in an historical building on the 265-acre estate in Middleburg.
