Planners looking for a vibrant, festive neighborhood in cosmopolitan San Francisco should consider Mission District for their next meeting or event. The neighborhood is known for its strong history and Latino heritage and is home to a strong independent arts community, marked by the neighborhood's many studios, galleries and performance spaces. Many of the neighborhood's arts spaces serve as Mission District event venues.
Mission District is easily reached via the Oakland International and San Francisco International airports. Oakland International Airport is located less than 12 miles outside of Mission District; and San Francisco International Airport less than 10. Both airports offer direct access to Bay Area Rapid Transit, which also serves the Mission District neighborhood.
Great for groups, Mission District is located less than two miles away from San Francisco's ultimate meeting venue, the Moscone Center. Consisting of three buildings, the Moscone Center covers more than 20 acres on three adjacent blocks in the heart of the city. The Moscone Center offers more than 700,000 square feet of exhibit space, up to 107 meeting rooms, nearly 123,000 square feet of pre-function space, up to 256,225 square feet of meeting space and six primary exhibit halls.
Event venues in Mission District include The Armory Community Center, which was once used as a National Guard facility. Today, the center is a capacious alternative event space for up to 2,000 guests. The neighborhood's Z Space and ODC Dance Commons also feature private event space. The stately Victoria and Roxie theaters are often used for film festivals and also offer meeting space.
Mission District area attractions include the Precita Eyes Muralist Association, whose members take guests on cultural and historic walking tours to view up to 60 murals in the neighborhood (part of the 1970s Chicano Mural Movement). Visitors to Mission District can also tour the city's trademark Anchor Brewing Company by appointment and taste the brewery's handcrafted ales. Creativity Explored in the Mission supports the work of artists with developmental disabilities and a number of urban wineries are springing up in this area. They offer tasting rooms and private event space as well as group team building opportunities.
Among the many dining venues in Mission District that double as private event venues are Foreign Cinema which serves sumptuous French bistro fare and shows foreign, independent films nightly in its outdoor courtyard; Mission Bowling Club, a “boutique” bowling alley that departs from tradition by serving award-winning food and specialty cocktails; Lolinda, an Argentinian steakhouse; and the award-winning Flour + Water.
