One of the region's most beloved and iconic heritage sites, the 13th-century Chillon Castle sits on a rocky inlet on the shore of Lake Geneva, minutes from Montreux. The rocky inlet has been occupied since the Bronze Age for strategic reasons; the castle was built by the House of Savoy to control passage along Lake Geneva, and was then used as an arsenal, prison and temporary residence of the Dukes of Savoy. Today, more than 300,000 people visit Chillon Castle each year to go back in time while touring its rooms and exhibits. Visitors can explore the underground rooms, which represent great 13th-century Gothic cathedrals, as well as the castle's three courtyards, four great halls and private chapel, which is one of the few religious buildings to survive the Reformation. Chillon Castle is open daily with seasonal hours; from April through September, the castle is open from 9 AM to 7 Pm, in October from 9:30 AM to 6 PM, from November through February from 10 AM to 5 PM and in March from 9:30 AM to 6 PM. Admission is CHF 12 for adults, CHF 6 for children ages 6 to 16 and free for children under age 6. Adults with a Riviera Card pay CHF 6, while children with a Riviera Card pay CHF 3. Group rates are available, as are guided tours by reservation. Chillon Castle features a number of spaces available for private rental; outdoor spaces include its private beach and Savoy Garden, while indoor spaces include the 300-person Aula Magna hall, 200-person Castellan's Dining Hall and 150-person Domus Clericorum, graced with a large fireplace. Groups of up to 30 can gather in the wood-paneled Albert Naef Conference Room, while groups of up to 14 can mingle among a 16th-century walnut wardrobe and 17th-century ceramic stove in the Camera Nova space.
