Muldersdrift, South Africa Meeting Planning Overview

For historians of the Boer War, the small community Muldersdrift (one of the farther-flung suburbs of Johannesburg, 20 miles to that city center's northwest) is of interest because one of the Boer leaders being captured here after a failed raid during the tussle for control of Johannesburg. Muldersdrift is the gateway to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and is also to the northwest of Magaliesburg Protected Natural Environment, a wildlife park. It sits on the Crocodile River and attracts tourists who are drawn to its pleasant accommodations and noble safari animals; groups can take advantage of Muldersdrift event venues.

OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) is approximately 40 miles southeast of Muldersdrift. Flights there come from all over the world, including from Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC-Dulles.

The closest convention center, Sandton Convention Center, is also to the southeast, some 20 miles, and it is a large meeting site, with 220,000 square feet of function space on four levels catering to up to 10,000 persons and including The Pavilion hosting up to 4,500 on its own.

Hotel venues in Muldersdrift tend toward the large guest house spread over considerable land and with small amounts of conference space. Choices closer to the center of Muldersdrift include the 209-room Misty Hills Country Hotel Conference Centre & Spa, which has thatched-roof guest cottages, 23 meeting and banquet rooms and an exhibition hall, and the 34-room Avianto, which is modeled on a European village and has a banquet hall, non-denominational chapel, a ballroom, Fireside Room and six meeting rooms all for events. Choices still in Muldersdrift but a little farther away are the 100-room Glenburn Lodge, which has 13 meeting and banquet rooms, the largest, Glenkyle, able to host 300 persons; 60-room Kloofzicht Lodge & Spa, which is a sibling of the Glenburn Lodge and has eight meeting rooms for up to 120 persons; and 35-room Valverde Country Hotel, which has five meeting rooms for 150 persons and function space for up to 200 persons.

Unique event locations in the area capitalize on the area’s natural scenery, wildlife and indigenous culture. Try the Waterfall Bar at the Aloe Ridge Game Reserve – a sibling of all the razzmatazz at the nearby Sun City hotels and entertainment – which overlooks from on high the River Blaaubankspruit; Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, which covers 1,600 acres and can host banquets, receptions and game drives; Lesedi Cultural Village, which has much African culture, five restaurants and conference space for up to 120 persons; Maropeng Visitor Center in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, which has a sod-covered “tumulus” main building containing a conference center for 500 persons and a wealth of information about human’s earliest roots; and The Willows, which has beautiful gardens, a conference room, a lapa-style restaurant and a thatched-roof banquet hall.

Restaurant here perfect for groups include the Summer House and Carnivore restaurants both at the Misty Hills Country Hotel Conference Centre & Spa; The Thatchery Country Restaurant, which sits on six acres and has a conference hall and a pub, as well as the restaurant; Bellgables, which sits on 21 acres and has the Old Dining Room for 30 persons and the Crystal Terrace Room for 80; and The Cradle Restaurant, which is at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and has five private dining areas, including a forest camp.
