Dhobi Ghat

Historical landmark
13 km away
A unique feature of Mumbai, the dhobi is a traditional laundryman, who will collect your dirty linen, wash it, and return it neatly pressed to your doorstep. All for a pittance. The "laundries" are called "ghats": row upon row of concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. The clothes are soaked in sudsy water, thrashed on the flogging stones, then tossed into huge vats of boiling starch and hung out to dry. Next they are ironed and piled into neat bundles. The most famous of these Dhobi Ghats is at Saat Rasta near Mahalaxmi Station where almost two hundred dhobis and their families work together in what has always been a hereditary occupation.

Victoria Terminus

Historical landmark
10 minutes away
Modeled on the lines of the St Pancras Station in London, Victoria Terminus is undoubtedly the Raj’s piece de resistance, complete with carved stone friezes, stained glass windows and flying buttresses. It is Gothic architecture at its best, an awesome edifice that most citizens view with deep pride. At the top of the central dome stands the triumphant figure of Progress. The station was christened to commemorate Victoria Jubilees Day in 1887 when India’s first steam engine puffed out to neighboring Thane, about 45 kms. away. Today it has been rechristened Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus after the Maratha warrior. And the old steam engines have been replaced by electric ones. But to the 2.5million commuters who push past its massive portals everyday, this is still VT, the pulse of a throbbing city.

Siddhivinayak Temple

Historical landmark
20 km away
Siddhivinayak Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ganesha. It is located in Prabhadevi, Dadar. The temple was originally built by Mr Laxman Vithu and Mrs Deubai Patil in 180 I. The temple has a small mandapam (hall) with the shrine for Siddhi Vinayak (Ganesha that grants your wish). The wooden doors to the sanctum are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak (the eight manifestations of Ganesha in Maharashtra). The inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold and in the periphery of the temple, there is a Hanuman temple as well.

Prince of Wales Museum/ Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The Key Gallery, located in the central foyer, showcases a representative collection from the various sections of the Museum such as Archaeology, Indian Miniature Paintings, Indian Decorative Arts and the Chinese and Japanese collection. It thus gives an overview of the Museum’s rich collection. Our aim at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is to create awareness of our rich ancient heritage among the people. Therefore, the museum, in addition to the artefacts that are showcased in the permanent galleries, regularly houses temporary exhibitions and lectures on a multitude of topics and also hosts special events.

Mani Bhavan

Historical landmark
12 km away
Mani Bhavan is a simple old-style, two storied building on Laburnum Road, Mumbai. Whenever Gandhiji was in Mumbai between 1917 to 1934, he stayed here.It is now converted into a museum and research centre. Mumbai and its inhabitants have played a very prominent part in India's unique struggle for freedom. Gandhiji was rightly proud of its patriotic and cosmopolitan citizens. Mani Bhavan is one of the few important places hallowed by Mahatma Gandhi's close association. Mani Bhavan has a story to tell as it housed Gandhiji occasionally during the times when he grew in stature and strength, from a queer type of an agitator to a world figure by successfully introducing satyagraha (individual as well as mass) as a new and effective weapon to fight all evil and injustice.

Crawford Market
